Description

This is my youngest child and Sailor Moon fan extraordinaire Mia. She's loved Sailor Moon since before she could talk, and has been wishing for a Sailor Moon related costume for a long time. Each year the kiddies take turns choosing a special costume for their daddy and I to work on. This year it was Mia's turn. She loves Sailor Saturn and purple so it seemed like a good match. My husband made her Silence Glaive so that Sailor Saturn would be able to slash through the hoards of Zombies and killer Clowns and leave chaos in her wake.

I'll upload a couple more related shots -of the back and the staff within the week.

The Tiara is part of one of those kiddie Sailor Moon accessory packs. The stone inside was made with Sculpty and white pearlescent paint.

Her crimson red bows are detachable and were made mainly using light weight interfacing and a costume satin. The tails for the back bow were lined with heavy interfacing to make them stand out to the sides more.

Her purple heart pin is made from sculpty and painted with lavender pearlescent acrylic paint. I'd like to change this to a resin heart sometime.

Her choker is a simple ribbon cut to length with a closure at the back and a glued on acrylic star gem.

The Sailor Collar is two seperate pieces. The Collar, Skirt, and arm bands are made using the same creped back satin. The color is a bit of a deep purple (as seen in this picture) and sometimes photographs in a shade of indigo blue. The Collar uses heavy interfacing to help give it that stiffness that it needs. The Skirt was pleated, though if I were to do it over again there are a few things I would change. For starters I'd try to make the pleats a bit deeper to make the skirt seem fuller. The armbands were made by using a few layers of batting and quilting it. I think I liked the effect that I achieved better on the shoulder bands of the costume and would do it that way if I were to do it again.

The body suit is made from what I think is lycra (Joann's calls it Swim Suit/ Dance Fabric). It is fully lined with "Swim Suit Fabric lining." Having done a cheesy Sailor Pluto costume years ago, I decided it was best to have a fully working zipper in the back. The shoulder bands are made from the same material and instead of batting have (painstakingly) inserted chaulking foam/cord. The Shoulder guard is made from thick transparent vinyl. The V band at the bottom is made using foam and has two layers of fabric. The V band is in two seperate section -which is not my unique idea and is something I saw a lovely Sailor Mars cosplayer do :D

The boots were originally cheap $1 black thrift store rescue boots. They were scuffed up at the tips. I did about 3 or 4 passes with a purple fabric paint on them and they have held up pretty well. My daughter liked them so much that she's decided to keep them for school. She wouldn't allow me to add the laces to mimic Saturn's boots.

The wig was originally much longer. It was a rather corse Halloween Wig that I purchased at Jo-ann because it was the right size (childs), the right color, and it seemed thick enough. It also had the appropriate bangs. I softened it up a bit with some braid spray. It is generally known to help soften up frizzy doll hair so I figured it couldn't hurt. After I had cut it in generally the shape we wanted, I used a liberal amount of Aqua Net and tried to straighten it with the blowdryer. I trimmed it a bit more and was given the thumbs up by Mia.

Her father made the Silence Glaive over several weeks. He took what he learned from the Lina (Slayers) armor and Azalyn's Staff and applied it here. He tried very hard to give it the look of having a razor sharp edge along the top part of the Glaive. The funny part is that he ultimately had to sand it down a bit because it became too sharp. :) We ended up running out of time and did not draw or etch the designs on the upper portion of the staff (the part that connects the blade to the staff), but will probably do something about it in the future. He used Krylon paints for the staff shiny silver and Gunmetal.
